At the insistence of his sister, Keith came to Hathaway House. He had already given up on regaining the future that she kept telling him he could find there, or any other future worth having for that matter. He believed he was too weak for the trip, the treatment, and any of the plans the team had for him. Keith thought he was broken beyond repair, and nothing they could do would fix him. But apparently they didn’t know that, because no one listened to him - not the doctors, not his sister, and definitely not the tiny woman who kept delivering his coffee at 5:00 a.m.

Ilse, the head chef for Hathaway House, rarely ventured out of the kitchen she managed. She found it easier to deal with groceries and staff than to see the pain and suffering of those she fed. However, something about Keith and his frailty called to her. She couldn't help but go out of her way to ensure he had everything he needed, even though she knew she could not keep their relationship on a professional level once it started - even if it wasn't in her best interests to do so. Because, in this case, Keith's best interests surely mattered much more than her own.
